AI-coded mashup mods put Minecraft in Elden Ring and Mario Kart in Call of Duty
In brief
- Gamers are vibe coding video game mashup mods with Claude AI agents, Decrypt reported.
- A GitHub guide cited by Decrypt describes a 'passthrough mod' that runs two games at once.
- Toby Jacobs' Minecraft-in-Elden Ring mod went viral but hasn't been released publicly.
- Skate in Modern Warfare 2 and Mario Kart in World at War Zombies appear in other clips.
How the merges work
Vibe coding is simple on paper. The user tells the AI model what they want, tests the outcomes and gives feedback, while the model writes the code, Decrypt reported.
Merging two games relies on a "passthrough mod," according to a popular GitHub guide cited by Decrypt. It runs both titles at the same time (one hosts the world, the other supplies the gameplay). The guide claims merging Elden Ring and Spider-Man took three to four hours, though it warned that first results are often rough.
Minecraft meets Malenia
Decrypt called Minecraft in Elden Ring perhaps the most viral of the merges. Creator Toby Jacobs showed it off in a September 29 post on X, noting that it runs on Mac.
I put the entire of game minecraft into elden ring as mod. its runs on Mac.
According to what Jacobs has shown in his posts, the mod gives access to 1,600 Minecraft items, working redstone contraptions and creative mode. Players can spawn mobs from eggs, so creepers can fight Malenia (Elden Ring's iconic boss) on their behalf. Black Ops guns are in there too, letting players switch between Minecraft and Call of Duty weapons.
You can't play it yet.
Jacobs hasn't released the mod to the public. He says he's open to the idea, but he'd first need to build a Windows port since he developed it for Mac.
Skateboards, nukes and banana peels
One of the first mashups to go viral combined cult classic Skate with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, letting players skateboard across the game's maps. X user chasm (@chasmmmmmmmmmmm) posted that clip on September 27.
MotionViz (@Motion_Viz) has posted two more. An October 2 clip shows Marvel's Spider-Man swinging through Batman's Gotham City, and the mod's creator joked about possible copyright trouble: "Wait 'til I get a DMCA." An October 7 clip drops Modern Warfare 2 weapons into Minecraft, where the player trickshots villagers with the Intervention sniper rifle, hits a 25-kill streak and calls in a tactical nuke.
ModernWarzone (@ModernWarzone) went a different direction on September 30. Its clip puts Mario Kart into the World at War Zombies game mode, where players trip up zombies with bananas and run them over for kills.
It's a strange, very online corner of gaming. And it's one where the code increasingly isn't written by the person posting the clip.
Frequently asked questions
What is vibe coding in the context of game mods?
Vibe coding means the user tells an AI model what they want, tests the results and gives feedback, while the AI model writes the code. Decrypt reported that gamers are using Claude AI agents this way to build mashup mods from scratch.
How do AI mashup mods merge two video games?
A popular GitHub guide cited by Decrypt says merging uses a 'passthrough mod' that runs two games at the same time. One game hosts the world and the other supplies the gameplay. The guide claims an Elden Ring and Spider-Man merge took three to four hours, with rough first results.
Can I download the Minecraft-in-Elden Ring mod?
Not yet. Creator Toby Jacobs hasn't released the mod to the public. He says he's open to it but would first need to build a Windows port, since he developed it for Mac.
