In brief

  • Anthropic's junior staff share of its technical workforce fell from 21% to 14% since early 2025, per the report.
  • Junior roles' share of Anthropic's technical hiring dropped from 27% to 9%.
  • Claude agents logged six times the work hours of human staff by August 2026.
  • About one-third of ML managers said they cut hiring because of AI use.

What the report found

The report was produced by Anthropic economists, including Nathan Wilmers, and it combined HR records, agent performance data and employee feedback. Junior roles made up 27% of Anthropic's technical hiring before the shift. That's now 9%, per Crypto Briefing's account of the report, which places a sharp drop in junior hiring after December 2025 (entry-level job postings fell noticeably from that point).

Technical hiring didn't stop. It kept growing, just more slowly than hiring for non-technical roles, and technical roles slipped from 61% of the total workforce to 56%. Business functions grew faster, and Anthropic said its non-technical employees were increasingly using coding tools themselves.

Agents are logging the hours

The bigger number is about agents. By August 2026, employee-directed Claude agents were logging six times the active work hours of Anthropic's human staff, according to the report.

Agents first passed human work hours in March 2026.

Output per engineer moved too. Code commits per engineer rose about 5x compared with six months earlier, the report said, while meeting time per employee rose 20% year-over-year (16% for technical staff).

What managers said

The report also drew on an April 2026 survey of Anthropic managers. Roughly one-third of machine learning managers said they'd cut hiring because of AI use, and about one-fifth of software engineering managers said the same. Junior roles were the most affected in both groups.

Crypto Briefing, in its own analysis, pointed out that Anthropic's staff had access to advanced Claude agents before most enterprises did, and it treated the company's workforce as a rough preview for other employers. It's a framing the outlet hedged right away. Anthropic is one company (and an unusual one), and its employees, who build AI for a living, are likely more comfortable delegating to agents than the average workforce, the publication noted.
