AnyPS5 converts PS5 games to run natively on PC, fueling GTA 6 speculation

In brief

  • AnyPS5 swaps Sony's system libraries for its own versions instead of emulating the PS5.
  • AnyPS5 says it has ported 100% of GPU shaders and 88% of system libraries.
  • A community tracker lists over 180 PS5 titles tried, with only a handful verified playable.
  • Gunzilla's Theodore Agranat called it feasible but doubts it can deliver AAA quality at scale.
  • AnyPS5's Discord bans piracy; per Decrypt, its rules mean games must be bought on PlayStation Store.

What the project says it has done

Decrypt reported that developers are porting PlayStation 5 applications to Windows and Linux. A community-run tracker lists more than 180 PS5 titles tried with the tool. Only a handful have been verified as playable.

The progress figures are self-reported. A post by Chris Mizo (@MizoChris) dated October 12 put overall system library support at 86.47% (3,005 of 3,475 declared system functions implemented), and the latest project update claims 100% of PS5 GPU shaders and 88% of system libraries have been ported. Discord community members think the final 12% will likely take a long time, since new libraries keep turning up.

Frame rates and the GTA 6 question

Community tests are rough. One developer reported running GTA 5 at 27 FPS in performance graphics mode, while others reported 4 FPS on Epic Mickey, 25 FPS on Phasmophobia and 60 FPS on Vampire Survivors. None of those games are fully playable, because of the incomplete library port and game-specific bugs.

That hasn't stopped the speculation.

Pseudonymous creator Schlayerr claimed on TikTok that GTA 6 would most likely run on PC at launch with higher frame rates than on PS5. (That's a creator's prediction, not a claim from the project.) Discord members say a mandatory firmware update is a potential roadblock.

Theodore Agranat, Director of Web3 at Gunzilla Games (the studio behind battle royale Off the Grid), told Decrypt the approach is technically feasible.

"Technically, this is feasible given the similarities between console and PC architectures, and AI can dramatically accelerate the reverse engineering work," Theodore Agranat, Director of Web3 at Gunzilla Games

He's still skeptical it can deliver the quality, performance and fidelity players expect from AAA games at scale. Firmware updates could create hurdles around DRM, he said, but likely wouldn't invalidate the whole approach.

Piracy rules and the disc debate

AnyPS5 bans piracy in its Discord server, and according to Decrypt, that rule means using the tool requires buying the game on the PlayStation Store. Some PlayStation users have speculated the movement is a response to Sony's plan to stop producing physical discs at the start of 2028, which Sony announced in July. A "Don't Kill the Disc" petition has gathered over 385,000 signatures, and former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden called the move a "heavily spreadsheeted decision."

Frequently asked questions

How does AnyPS5 run PS5 games on PC?

AnyPS5 is an open-source, AI-powered GitHub project that converts PS5 game executables into programs that run natively on PC. It doesn't emulate the console. It swaps Sony's system libraries for its own versions, according to Decrypt.

Can AnyPS5 run GTA 6 on PC at launch?

No one has shown that. TikTok creator Schlayerr claimed it most likely would, but Discord members flagged a mandatory firmware update as a potential roadblock. The games shown in community tests so far aren't fully playable.

Does using AnyPS5 involve piracy?

AnyPS5 bans any form of piracy in its Discord server. According to Decrypt, that rule means using the tool requires buying the game on the PlayStation Store.
