Bitcoin drops 2% as copper, stocks and yields fall while gold climbs 1%
In brief
- Bitcoin fell more than 2% in 24 hours, per CoinDesk's Oct. 15 Daybook.
- XRP, ether and solana slid further than bitcoin.
- 10-year Treasury yield dropped eight basis points to 5.08%; gold gained 1%.
- CME fed funds futures priced only a 29% chance of a rate hike this month.
- 10x Research prefers holding bitcoin only while BTC stays above $78,000.
A risk-off tape, not a crypto one
Other major coins did worse. XRP, ether and solana all slid further than bitcoin, per CoinDesk, which framed the selling as part of a wider retreat rather than anything specific to crypto.
It wasn't hard to see why. Copper futures fell nearly 1%, adding to Wednesday's 1.6% decline (copper is closely watched as a barometer of global economic health). Asian stocks were dragged lower by a rout in Korean chipmakers, and Nasdaq index futures fell too, along with risk-sensitive currency pairs like the Australian dollar against the Swiss franc.
Havens went the other way.
The 10-year Treasury yield dropped eight basis points to 5.08%, extending its pullback from a recent peak of 5.36%, and gold gained 1%. Treasuries and gold are often treated as haven investments, and CoinDesk said the combination pointed to investors reducing exposure to risk and seeking safety.
“It feels more like a stagflationary environment where risk assets and the US dollar generally underperform, while gold outperforms,” InvestingLive analyst Giuseppe Dellamotta wrote in a market update.
Rate-hike odds are fading
Wednesday's hotter-than-expected U.S. CPI report was cited as one catalyst, since it revived worries that the Fed would raise rates. That concern appeared to be fading by Thursday. CME fed funds futures priced only a 29% chance of a hike into the 4%–4.25% range later this month, CoinDesk reported, with the remaining probability on rates staying at 3.75%–4%. Hike odds briefly approached 50% right after the CPI print before falling back quickly.
Thursday's producer price index was expected to offer another read on how much inflation remains in the pipeline. CoinDesk said a hot reading could add to the risk-off mood, and traders were also watching whether the AI trade would keep unwinding.
What 10x Research and the charts say
Analysts at 10x Research said they still preferred holding bitcoin while that unwind plays out, but only as long as BTC holds above $78,000. They also said they'd rather use ether as a hedge for long bitcoin positions.
Ether's chart is its own story. In CoinDesk's technical read, ETH was testing a dual support zone near $2,350, formed by a horizontal line that's acted as support since Aug. 23 and an ascending trendline tracking the uptrend from the July lows. A break below that zone would signal a significant weakening of demand and could open the door to deeper losses, CoinDesk said.
