In brief

  • Fed decision Wednesday: 70% probability rates unchanged, 30% chance 25bp hike
  • Bitcoin up 6% July; S&P 500 flat; semiconductor stocks down 20%
  • Only two Fed meetings since 2015 showed comparable market divergence
  • Crypto sentiment improves despite uncertainty; Bitcoin outperforms AI-linked tech

Fed Uncertainty Divides Markets

Markets currently price a 70% probability that the Fed leaves rates unchanged Wednesday and a 30% chance of a 25-basis-point hike. The split reflects Chair Kevin Warsh's reduced use of forward guidance, leaving investors with less clarity on the central bank's next move.

Looking at every Fed meeting since 2015, only two have seen markets more divided over the outcome than the upcoming decision. This uncertainty has rippled across asset classes — AI-linked technology stocks stumbled again ahead of the meeting while traditional equities held steady.

Bitcoin's Relative Resilience

Bitcoin is up about 6% for the month, while the S&P 500 has been little changed, and semiconductor stocks have fallen nearly 20%. Bitcoin has largely held its ground in July while chipmakers and other AI favorites have come under pressure.

Analysts say the divergence matters. "Anything remotely dovish from Warsh could lead to BTC's outperformance continuing," said Thahbib Rahman, research analyst at Block Scholes. The argument rests on a simple premise: crypto has decoupled from the rate-sensitive tech sector and may benefit more from dovish signals than semiconductor stocks, which face structural headwinds from oversupply.

Even so, crypto sentiment has continued to improve, suggesting traders are pricing in relative resilience. The broader crypto ecosystem has also shown stability. Binance held share (~55% user funds, ~24% spot) and drew net inflows in early July, indicating sustained user confidence despite macroeconomic headwinds.

The Fed's decision Wednesday will test whether this decoupling holds. If Warsh signals any dovish tilt, Bitcoin's relative outperformance versus tech could accelerate. If the Fed holds firm or hints at future hikes, crypto sentiment may face renewed pressure — though the current technical setup suggests Bitcoin has already priced in baseline hawkishness.
