In brief

  • Bitcoin traded at $81,200, down around 0.5% since midnight UTC, per CoinDesk data.
  • Buyers stepped in just above $80,000 around 02:30 UTC, near the Oct. 8 low.
  • The CoinDesk 80 fell 2.2%, and all but six CoinDesk 100 members were lower.
  • South Korea's Kospi plunged 8% in the same session, triggering circuit breakers.
  • CME FedWatch odds of an October Fed hike jumped to nearly 47%, then eased to roughly 26%.

Altcoins take the bigger hit

Bitcoin had been down 1% earlier in the day before trimming that loss, per CoinDesk's market report. Buyers showed up just above $80,000 at around 02:30 UTC. That's close to the Oct. 8 low of about $80,300.

The rest of the market didn't hold up as well. Ether fell 2.0% to near $2,370, and the CoinDesk 80 (CD80) slid 2.2% while the bitcoin-dominant CoinDesk 5 (CD5) lost around 0.7%. Lower market cap tokens saw the biggest moves (the CoinDesk Memecoin Index dropped 4.0%), and Pump.fun's PUMP token fell 9.4%.

All but six CoinDesk 100 members were lower.

Stocks slide in the same session

Asian equities had a rough day. South Korea's Kospi plunged 8% and triggered circuit breakers, according to CoinDesk. In the U.S., Nasdaq 100 index futures slid about 1%, extending Wednesday's 1.9% drop in the Nasdaq Composite. Crypto's losses played out over the same window, although the figures on their own don't show that one market drove the other.

Rate-hike odds swing

Wednesday's hotter-than-expected inflation report moved rate pricing fast. Odds of an October Federal Reserve rate increase jumped to nearly 47% on CME's FedWatch, up from about 22% beforehand, CoinDesk reported. They've since fallen back to roughly 26%.

That's still above the pre-report level, but it's well short of a coin flip.

CoinDesk said Treasury yields and hike pricing are the next signals to watch heading into the U.S. open. For bitcoin, the area just above $80,000 (where buyers stepped in overnight) is still the nearest reference point on the chart.
