Close-up of Bitcoin coins with a financial trading graph in the background, showcasing digital currency dynamics.

In brief

  • Bitcoin holds key support after 6% intraday sell-off; DonAlt flags upside potential.
  • Fed Governor Warsh's hawkish remarks sparked selling pressure; price recovered to $77,100.
  • Q3 performance: 32.48% gain, well above historical 7.94% quarterly average.
  • Analyst McGlone warns of Fed policy headwinds and rising equity correlation.
  • $80,000–$81,000 zone represents major technical test for bulls.

Resilience at Support

Bitcoin has recovered from a sharp decline after Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh took a more hawkish tone. The cryptocurrency briefly pushed above $80,000 in late August before retreating toward $77,000, then stabilized and began recovering. Rather than extending the decline, Bitcoin's ability to hold support caught the attention of traders monitoring intraday technicals.

DonAlt interpreted this support-holding as a bullish signal in a post on X, noting the setup could precede another upward move. However, one day of support-holding does not confirm a sustained reversal. The $80,000–$81,000 area could become a major test for bulls, and whether Bitcoin can clear this zone remains contested.

Q3 Outperformance and Macro Headwinds

Bitcoin's quarterly performance tells a more nuanced story. The cryptocurrency has risen sharply from approximately $64,700 earlier in August to consolidate near $78,000. Bitcoin's Q3 return stands at approximately 32.48%, substantially above its historical average Q3 return of 7.94%. This follows two consecutive quarterly declines: a 22.2% loss in Q1 and a 14.09% decline in Q2.

Yet analyst Mike McGlone warned that Bitcoin continues to face significant macroeconomic headwinds, including Federal Reserve policy, competition within the crypto market, and increasing correlation with equities. These structural challenges could limit upside even if near-term technicals remain constructive.

On-Chain Flows and Institutional Positioning

MicroStrategy purchased 4,603 BTC for approximately $369.7 million between August 24 and August 30 at an average price of $80,318, underscoring institutional appetite. Separately, Whale Alert reported a transfer of 1,922 BTC worth approximately $149.7 million between two unidentified wallets on August 31. Large wallet movements can signal repositioning, though the direction and intent remain opaque without additional context.
