Bitcoin slips below $82,000 as AI spending doubts hit stocks, DeFi tokens drop 5.6%
In brief
- Bitcoin fell below $82,000, losing as much as 2.9% since midnight UTC, per CoinDesk.
- CoinDesk linked the selloff to AI spending doubts following Tesla and Meta earnings.
- CoinDesk's DeFi index (DFX) slid 5.6%; the CoinDesk 80 fell 3.2%.
- Spot bitcoin ETFs drew over $1 billion in the week's first three days, per SoSoValue.
AI doubts spill into crypto
CoinDesk tied the move to mixed earnings reports from Tesla and Meta Platforms, which it said revived doubts over AI spending and sent Asian equities lower. That's CoinDesk's explanation (the report doesn't put a number on how much of bitcoin's drop traces back to tech earnings), but the timing lines up with a rough day across risk assets.
The equity damage was wide. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell more than 3%, South Korea's Kospi lost 3.5% and Japan's Nikkei 225 slipped 2.7%.
Chinese stocks entered a bear market.
U.S. futures followed. Nasdaq 100 index futures dropped 1.32% and S&P 500 futures fell 0.66%, with U.S. jobless claims data scheduled for release later in the day.
DeFi takes the hardest hit
Altcoins fell more than bitcoin. The CoinDesk 80 (CD80) was recently down 3.2%, compared with a 2.5% decline for the CoinDesk 5 (CD5). Ether lost 2.6% to near $2,400.
DeFi is where it really hurt. CoinDesk's DeFi sector index (DFX) slid 5.6%, the steepest decline of the session according to the report, and it's a sharper fall than anything in the large-cap basket.
Solana had its own news. The network's Alpenglow upgrade went live overnight, yet SOL still fell 2.4% to around $104.
ETF demand held up earlier in the week
Not every signal pointed lower. Spot bitcoin ETFs took in more than $1 billion over the first three days of the week, according to SoSoValue data cited by CoinDesk.
Those figures only cover the first three days of the week, though. They don't show how ETF buyers reacted to today's drop below $82,000, and that's the number worth watching once fresh flow data comes in.
