BlackRock IBIT Logs $202M Outflow as Clients Rotate to Ethereum ETFs
In brief
- BlackRock IBIT recorded $202.48M outflow (3,130 BTC) in one trading day, ending recent inflow streak
- Spot Ethereum ETFs gained $26.32M net inflows; BlackRock's ETH fund added $11.39M
- Bitcoin declined 1% to $65,400+ despite $800B tech-sector equity sell-off
Capital Rotation Into Ethereum
BlackRock clients withdrew $202.48 million from IBIT, but the outflow didn't trigger panic selling across the Bitcoin ETF complex. Total net outflows across the entire spot Bitcoin ETF market reached $225.18 million on the same day. Meanwhile, institutional capital flowed into spot Ethereum ETFs, which recorded net inflows of $26.32 million. BlackRock's Ethereum ETF attracted an additional $11.39 million during this period.
The reallocation reflects a tactical shift. Clients didn't exit crypto entirely—they repositioned into a different asset within the same ecosystem. IBIT itself continues to manage more than $60 billion in assets, underscoring the fund's scale despite the single-day outflow.
Bitcoin's Resilience Amid Market Chaos
The real surprise wasn't the withdrawal itself. It was Bitcoin's response to it. Bitcoin price declined by only 1% and remained firmly above $65,400 on the same day the U.S. stock market suffered a severe technology-sector sell-off that erased $800 billion from the market capitalization of major IT companies.
That divergence matters. Bitcoin shrugged off both the ETF outflow and the equities panic. The fact that Bitcoin ignored the panic in equities and held above $65,400 points to its growing independence from the traditional market.
Competing Narratives
Analysts split on what comes next. Optimists describe the price stability as a "reaccumulation zone" ahead of another move higher. Bitcoin remains far above the critical average institutional purchase price of $53,000, which some see as a floor for institutional confidence.
Skeptics offer a different read. If outflows from Bitcoin ETFs continue, buyers may simply lack the strength to maintain support, potentially opening the way for a deeper decline.
Context matters here. Total inflows into all spot Bitcoin ETFs since their launch have exceeded $51.63 billion, so a single day of outflows doesn't reverse the longer institutional trend. The question is whether this rotation is a blip or the start of a sustained shift toward Ethereum.
