Coinbase Appoints Rob Witoff as Chief Technology Officer
In brief
- Rob Witoff appointed Coinbase chief technology officer, returning after prior tenure as chief architect
- Witoff joined Coinbase as engineer in 2014, previously founded security startup Unit 410 acquired by Coinbase
- Appointment follows May 2026 restructuring that cut 700 employees and reorganized teams around AI development
Building from the Ground Up
Witoff's journey with Coinbase spans over a decade. His fascination with Bitcoin began in 2009, eventually leading him to join the crypto exchange as an engineer in 2014. At that time, the company initially ran on Heroku, supported just a single cryptocurrency, and operated from one codebase with a small engineering team. Over the years, Witoff rose through the ranks, previously serving as the company's chief architect before departing to found security startup Unit 410, which Coinbase later acquired.
AI-First Transformation
Coinbase's leadership has been reshaping the company's structure around artificial intelligence. In 2026, Coinbase accelerated its transformation into what Armstrong has called an "AI-first" company. That shift included significant organizational changes. In May, the exchange announced a restructuring that cut approximately 700 employees, or roughly 14% of its global workforce, and flattened management layers while reorganizing teams around AI-assisted development.
The appointment of Witoff as CTO signals the company's intent to deepen this transformation. CEO Brian Armstrong described him as the driving force behind making Coinbase "one of the most AI-enabled companies in the world." According to the announcement, Witoff's mission as CTO is to make Coinbase "the best place in the world to build."
Culture Through Change
Despite the dramatic organizational shifts, Witoff emphasized continuity. He said the company's core culture has remained unchanged, describing Coinbase as a team that continues to "relentlessly ship" products in pursuit of its mission.
The CTO role comes as Coinbase continues to navigate a shifting regulatory landscape. In July, Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal announced his departure after six years leading Coinbase's legal strategy, adding another leadership transition to the company's 2026 reshuffle.
