Compound's COMP rises 27.3% in 24 hours, outpacing Bitcoin and Ether

In brief

  • COMP rose 27.3% over 24 hours on October 20, according to The Defiant.
  • COMP also beat Bitcoin and Ether over the past seven and 28 days.
  • No announcement, governance vote or partnership has been identified as the catalyst.
  • Compound's total value locked remains below its late-September level, per The Defiant.

A rally without a clear catalyst

The daily move isn't a one-off. COMP also led both Bitcoin and Ether over the past seven and 28 days, per The Defiant's figures cited by Crypto Briefing. The token had traded around $21.60 on October 17, according to CoinMarketCap data.

What's missing is a reason.

No announcement, governance vote or partnership has been identified as a catalyst for the move.

That's how Crypto Briefing put it, and it leaves the price action unexplained (at least publicly) for now.

Lending activity hasn't followed

The rally hasn't been matched on the protocol side. Compound's total value locked remains below its late-September level, according to The Defiant, so the token's gains aren't showing up as new capital in the defi lending market itself.

For context, Compound's protocol TVL stood at about $1.53 billion in early September, Crypto Briefing reported. That's when the Compound Foundation launched an Institutional Market for USDC lending on Compound v3.

The institutional push

The Institutional Market accepts ETH collateral at loan-to-value ratios of up to 87%, along with wstETH, WBTC and cbBTC. It's part of a $52 million institutional program, per Crypto Briefing.

It's tempting to tie a new product to a rising token, but the reporting doesn't do that. No link between the institutional program and this week's price move has been reported, and we're not drawing one here either.
