Crypto Is Infrastructure for AI Agents, Says Coinbase CEO Armstrong
In brief
- Armstrong rejects pivot-to-AI trend as "zero-sum thinking" among crypto firms
- Crypto infrastructure complements AI agents like electricity complements computation
- AI agents require programmable money and real-time settlement only crypto provides
- USDC stablecoin already powers majority of agentic payments on Coinbase
- Base blockchain and x402 protocol position Coinbase in emerging AiFi sector
Zero-Sum Thinking
Armstrong called the advice for crypto companies to pivot to AI a case of flawed reasoning. "I used to hear versions of this, and it's the wrong way to think about the world. It's zero sum, scarcity thinking," he said in response to the trend of Bitcoin miners and digital asset firms reorienting around AI infrastructure.
The Coinbase CEO positioned crypto as infrastructure comparable to electricity or the internet—a general-purpose technology that doesn't compete with the next big thing "because it underpins it." This framing suggests that the emergence of AI doesn't diminish crypto's role; rather, it creates new demand for the financial layer crypto provides.
Why Agents Need Crypto
Armstrong's core argument hinges on a practical constraint: AI agents cannot open bank accounts, wait for wire transfers, or reside in a single country, and therefore need "real time programmable money" in the form of crypto to hold funds and transact autonomously. He said AI agents will eventually transact far more per day than all humans combined, requiring financial infrastructure that operates at machine speed without geographic friction.
The agents Armstrong envisions will trade, act as financial advisors, and raise or borrow money for their own projects. None of these functions are possible within the constraints of traditional banking rails, which operate on human timescales and require legal residency.
Coinbase's Bet on AiFi
Coinbase itself has leaned into what Armstrong calls "AiFi"—the convergence of AI and decentralized finance. The exchange has contributed to the x402 protocol and built the Base blockchain as part of this emerging category. More immediately, Coinbase's USDC stablecoin already powers the vast majority of agentic payments, according to Armstrong.
This positioning reflects Coinbase's earlier restructuring. The exchange cut 14% of its staff earlier in the year amid a crypto downturn, but Armstrong cast the restructuring as a drive to rebuild the company "lean, fast, and AI-native," with "AI at our core". Rather than abandoning crypto, Coinbase repositioned itself to serve the infrastructure layer that AI agents will depend on.
