DTCC Launches Tokenized Stock Pilot With BlackRock, Goldman, JPMorgan
In brief
- DTCC pilots tokenized stocks, ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries with 40 financial institutions
- JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Vanguard, and NYSE participate in pilot
- Scalable launch targeted for October 2025
The pilot framework
DTCC announced the initiative to test tokenized assets across collateral management, repo transactions, margin, and asset transfers. The pilot will use blockchain-based versions of stocks, exchange-traded funds, and U.S. treasuries held at DTCC. Participants also include the New York Stock Exchange.
Nadine Chakar, global head of DTCC Digital Assets, laid out the vision: "Today is the beginning of a long journey where we will demonstrate that the old and the new can live together, [and] that the technology enables a lot of opportunities for our participants worldwide. We're going to prove the value of tokenization and hopefully build the foundation that would lead to a scalable launch come October."
What tokenization means
Tokenization refers to the process of creating blockchain-based representations of real-world assets, including stocks, bonds, U.S. treasuries, commodities, and real estate. The concept isn't new to crypto markets — real-world asset protocols surpassed $10 billion in total value locked as of May 2025.
One critical caveat: tokenized digital assets don't necessarily confer legal ownership of the underlying asset. They can be traded on cryptocurrency exchanges, but the legal status remains distinct from holding the actual security.
DTCC's scale and context
Formed in 1999 through the merger of the Depository Trust Company and the National Securities Clearing Corporation, DTCC is the infrastructure backbone of U.S. securities markets. The organization processed $4.7 quadrillion in securities transactions in 2025. A pilot at this scale signals serious institutional intent to integrate blockchain infrastructure into legacy settlement systems.
The timing aligns with broader momentum. Robinhood launched Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum layer-2 network designed for tokenized stocks, ETFs and other real-world assets, earlier in May. DTCC's October target suggests the financial establishment is moving past proof-of-concept into deployment planning.
