DTCC sets late-October tokenization launch, Stellar slated for first half of 2027
In brief
- DTCC plans to open commercial access to its Tokenization Service at the end of October.
- Tokenization Service covers about $30 trillion in DTC-held assets, which U.Today put at a quarter of DTC's total.
- Launch starts with 25 instruments on Canton Network and a private Hyperledger Besu environment.
- Stellar is slated to join via SEP-41 in the first half of 2027, alongside Circle's Arc.
A closed start on private rails
DTCC's October 16 report, as summarized by U.Today, describes a strict framework for the early phase. The system starts with 25 liquid instruments (U.S. Treasuries, major ETFs and large-cap Russell 1000 stocks). Each token is pegged 1:1 to its underlying security and keeps its CUSIP code and all legal rights, while DTC stays the final owner of the official registry.
From the end of October, operations are planned on two closed platforms: Canton Network (CIP-56 standard) and DTCC's own private environment built on Hyperledger Besu (ERC-20). Under the approved plan, the first wave of liquidity goes to private bank networks. U.Today's read is that large capital isn't ready to take risks on open ledgers, and that's why DTCC went with an isolated architecture.
The launch follows a closed pilot in July that drew more than 30 Wall Street financial institutions.
How conversion works
The report says converting traditional securities into tokens through the UI or API takes no more than 15 minutes. There's a catch. Conversions can only happen during East Coast business hours.
Inside the system, though, the rules loosen considerably. Institutional players can move tokenized assets around the clock, directly between their wallets.
Where Stellar fits
Integration with public networks was originally planned for the first half of 2027, and U.Today reported that the schedule hasn't changed. Under DTCC's plan, Stellar is set to join the platform alongside Circle's Arc, using its SEP-41 standard to transfer assets.
By 2027, DTCC also plans to expand the list of available securities, add support for corporate actions and launch on-chain collateral settlement using digital cash.
Public blockchains, Stellar included, are on next year's calendar, not this month's.
