Fantom Opera shuts down June 30 as Sonic Labs completes network migration
In brief
- Fantom Opera shuts down June 30, 2026 at 17:00 GMT per Sonic Labs announcement April 7
- Stargate V1 pools hold $486K–$576K in total value locked; V2 unaffected
- ERC-20 FTM to S token conversion and Sonic Gateway bridge remain operational post-shutdown
- Historical on-chain records from Opera stay accessible after network wind-down
Migration nears completion
By early 2026, the bulk of migration activity was complete. The shift from Opera to Sonic represents a deliberate pivot away from the legacy chain. Still, pockets of liquidity remain scattered across older protocols.
Stargate V1 pools on Fantom currently hold between $486K and $576K in total value locked. That's a small but material amount for the cross-chain liquidity protocol's V1 iteration. (Stargate V1 is distinct from the protocol's current V2 iteration.) Liquidity providers who haven't migrated their positions face a hard deadline: June 30, 2026.
What survives the shutdown
The shutdown doesn't mean a complete erasure. The ERC-20 FTM to S token conversion mechanism remains operational after Opera closes. That's critical for holders still sitting on FTM who need to bridge to Sonic's native S token.
The Sonic Gateway bridge is unaffected by the Fantom Opera shutdown. Users can still move assets across chains. Historical on-chain records from the Opera network will also remain accessible after the shutdown. Archival nodes and explorers will preserve the chain's history for compliance and audit purposes.
The message is clear: Opera is sunsetting, but the ecosystem's infrastructure—conversion tools, bridges, and records—stays intact. Liquidity providers on Stargate V1 should prioritize moving their positions to V2 or off-chain venues before the deadline hits.
