Campus AI Agents in Action
At San José State University, Fetch.ai built what it calls "Welcome Week AI Agents." These are autonomous tools meant to help incoming students explore events hosted by SJSU's International Student Organization and connect with alumni. Over at California State University, Long Beach, a different flavor of agent was deployed: a "Scavenger Hunt" bot designed to turn campus exploration into a game.
Both agents were built using Fetch.ai's own technical stack, including its uAgents framework, the Agentverse platform, and ASI:One. Notably, these campus agents appear to be running as straightforward AI tools without blockchain components. The uAgents framework itself is open-source and designed to let anyone build autonomous agents.
Building a Developer Pipeline
By putting tools into the hands of computer science students at top-tier schools, the company is building a pipeline of developers who understand autonomous agent architecture before they even hit the job market. Fetch.ai's Innovation Lab has been running educational outreach, including hackathons, workshops, and guest lectures, at UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Imperial College London, and the University of Cambridge.
The company has also invested directly in academic research. Fetch.ai awarded $100,000 to UCLA specifically to enhance AI research capabilities on campus.
Scaling the Strategy
These campus agents are part of a larger strategy that Fetch.ai is planning to ramp up significantly between 2025 and 2026. The move reflects a broader bet that educational institutions will become key testing grounds for autonomous agent technology.
