In brief

  • Fidelity urges Senate passage of CLARITY Act for clear digital asset regulations
  • Third-largest asset manager ($7.1T AUM) joins coalition pushing for bill
  • Senate Republicans hold 52-47 majority; bill requires 60 votes to advance
  • Coinbase CEO and industry groups called for floor vote earlier this week

Industry Pressure Mounts

Fidelity's push follows similar calls from other major players. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong called for a full Senate floor vote on Wednesday. Earlier Friday, the Crypto Council for Innovation, the Digital Chamber and the Blockchain Association called on Senate leaders to bring the CLARITY Act bill to the floor.

The CLARITY Act would establish a regulatory framework for digital assets in the US. Republicans released updated bill text on Wednesday. The measure needs 60 votes to pass the Senate, and Republicans currently hold a 52-47 majority, meaning the bill would need Democratic support to advance.

Regulatory Hurdles Remain

Some Democrats have raised concerns about the bill's scope. Some Democrats argued the CLARITY Act's ethics provisions do not go far enough to address corruption concerns.

Fidelity's involvement signals mainstream finance's appetite for regulatory clarity in digital assets. The firm's $7.1 trillion in managed assets underscores the stakes for the industry—clear rules could unlock institutional participation and reshape how traditional finance engages with crypto markets.
