Google Cloud unveils Gemini Agent that can join a company with its own email
In brief
- Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud CEO, presented the Gemini Agent at the Gemini at Work event.
- Coworker agents get their own email address, calendar, Drive storage and directory listing.
- Tasks keep running in the cloud after users close their laptops, Google said.
- Google published no pricing and no general availability date.
An agent with its own inbox
The standout feature is what Google calls coworker agents. A manager describes a role (Google's example was an events coordinator) and Gemini creates an agent with its own Workspace account, which includes an email address, a calendar, Drive storage and a listing in the company directory.
The agent doesn't stop when you do. Google said it keeps running in the cloud after users close their laptops, so one task can stretch across hours or days. According to the company, it connects to Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, Snowflake, BigQuery and any server that supports Model Context Protocol. Google also said Gemini orchestrates across its own Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models, sending each job to whichever one Google considers the best fit for quality and cost.
work now starts in the prompt window.
Kurian made that remark while presenting the agent at the event.
Identity, sandboxing and spend caps
Google paired the coworker pitch with security controls it described at the event, as reported by Decrypt. Every agent gets a cryptographically attested identity, and every action is logged in an audit trail attributed to the agent rather than to a person. Agents run inside what Google calls an Agent Sandbox, and their traffic passes through Agent Gateway, which the company described as an "AI network firewall."
Sandboxes don't always hold, though. In July, researchers at Accomplish AI reported that the local mode of Claude Cowork could escape its Linux virtual machine on Macs and reach files on the host computer.
Google also pointed to scale. It said nearly 500 of its customers each processed more than one trillion tokens over the past year. Alongside the agent, it added real-time spend caps: when a project hits its limit, the agent pauses until someone clicks to resume.
What Google hasn't said yet
Google didn't publish pricing or a general availability date for the Gemini agent.
It's also rolling out industry versions in stages. The financial services and legal versions are in preview, while government, healthcare and retail versions are listed as coming soon.
