In brief

  • HSBC began rolling out RedCoin (RCHKD), a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, via PayMe on Oct. 23.
  • PayMe's 3.3 million-plus users and 100,000+ merchants are potential reach, not active RedCoin holders.
  • Users must meet eligibility rules and activate a stablecoin wallet before converting HKD.
  • RedCoin pays no interest and isn't covered by Hong Kong's Deposit Protection Scheme.
  • HSBC HK App wallet and tokenized fund subscriptions are planned for later in 2026.

What PayMe users can do now

HSBC's launch announcement puts PayMe's reach at more than 3.3 million users and over 100,000 merchants. That's the app's existing network. It isn't a count of RedCoin holders. Wallet activation is set to continue over the coming days, so those numbers show how far the token could reach, not how many people are actually using it.

Access isn't automatic. PayMe users have to meet eligibility requirements and activate a stablecoin wallet before they can convert Hong Kong dollars into RedCoin. HSBC's terms describe buying one token by deducting HK$1 from the user's HKD balance in the same channel. Once a wallet is active, it can send to other PayMe stablecoin-wallet holders, and HSBC's product FAQ says users can pay with RedCoin wherever a business accepts PayMe (no need to check separately whether the merchant takes the stablecoin).

A closed network, by design

HSBC restricts RedCoin distribution to its official channels. The bank says the token isn't available on third-party platforms and runs on HSBC's own distributed-ledger network.

It's a closed loop.

Redemption also runs through HSBC's own channels. Under the terms, holders submit a request through the permitted app and receive HKD at face value in the same channel, after any applicable fees. Valid requests are to be processed immediately (subject to conditions) within one business day. HSBC can still refuse or delay transactions over wallet limits, incomplete instructions, legal or fraud concerns, or events outside its reasonable control.

HSBC says RedCoin is backed by segregated, liquid, high-quality assets, with reserves covering every coin outstanding at all times. The token doesn't pay interest, and it isn't covered by Hong Kong's Deposit Protection Scheme.

What HSBC says comes next

HSBC plans to add a stablecoin wallet to its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026 and to enable subscriptions to tokenized investment products, including a forthcoming share class of its HKD money market fund. The product FAQ lists those services as coming soon. It also says RedCoin can't be moved between the PayMe and HSBC HK App stablecoin wallets, so under the current FAQ the two balances stay separate.
