The arrest and the warning
The Emporia city commission had explicitly warned attendees before the meeting that clapping, snapping, and other demonstrations would be considered disruptions. Despite this notice, Claridge applauded several times in support of speakers opposing the data center project. He was subsequently handcuffed and removed from the meeting.
The commission voted to approve the zoning changes needed for the AI data center project to proceed.
Nationwide opposition
Claridge's arrest reflects a wider pattern of public backlash against AI infrastructure expansion. Opponents held 142 protests across 42 states in what was described as the first coordinated nationwide demonstrations against AI data center development.
Public appetite for these projects remains thin. A June Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 14% of Americans would support an AI data center being built in their community.
AI data center projects have drawn opposition in several states over electricity demand, water consumption, noise, and tax incentives. In January, a Brookings report warned that local concerns over these issues were affecting proposed AI data center developments. In April 2026, Maine lawmakers even approved legislation that would have temporarily paused construction of large AI data centers.
What's next
Claridge plans to plead not guilty when he appears in court in September. After posting bail, he told KWCH that while the arrest was inconvenient, it wouldn't deter him from speaking out or clapping in the future.
