Simplicity as a market opener
Crypto options activity remains a fraction of what it is in traditional markets, but the gap is closing as professional capital moves into digital assets. Yet derivatives account for the vast majority of crypto trading volumes, with options remaining a relatively small corner. The market is dominated by a handful of established venues including Deribit, CME Group and Binance.
Alexia Theodorou, Kraken's director of derivatives, argued that the real opportunity isn't fighting for share against incumbents. Rather, the larger opportunity is expanding the addressable market by making options easier to use. The existing options market in crypto has been built for a narrow slice of the trader base—institutional traders and market makers. Retail traders instead have gravitated toward perpetual futures, which became the industry's dominant speculative product.
Product design as the lever
Kraken's options are built for a different user. The contracts are linear, USD-settled, and remove the need to manage crypto collateral or settlement. Premiums, profit and loss, and settlement are all denominated in U.S. dollars. The exchange has also integrated options into the same unified account that clients use for spot and futures trading.
Portfolio margin is enabled by default, allowing offsetting positions across products to reduce collateral requirements. Users can post collateral in more than 30 currencies. Kraken's bet is that removing friction—crypto settlement complexity, separate account management, opaque pricing—opens the addressable market.
What's next
Kraken has invested heavily in the trading interface, with educational tools designed to help traders understand strategies such as calls, puts and multi-leg positions. Future updates are expected to include a public order book to improve price discovery, broader geographic availability and support for additional assets. Europe is the next major expansion target, and Kraken already holds the regulatory permissions needed for European expansion.
