Lido update says 40% of staked ETH now runs on Ethereum's 0x02 validators

In brief

  • 40% of staked ETH now sits on 0x02 validators, according to a Lido-linked update.
  • About 1.8 million ETH migrated from older 0x01 validators, according to the update.
  • 0x02 validators can carry an effective balance of up to 2,048 ETH since Pectra.
  • Lido's CMv2 plan targets over 8 million ETH from 265,000+ legacy validators.
  • About 628,000 validators projected once consolidation finishes, per research cited by Crypto Briefing.

What 0x02 validators change

Ethereum's Pectra hard fork in May 2025 changed validator rules through EIP-7251. The core change is simple. Validators using the 0x02 type can carry an effective balance of up to 2,048 ETH, which means larger stakes fit into one validator (instead of being split across many smaller ones).

Bigger stakes fit into one validator, and rewards can compound instead of stalling at a fixed ceiling.

Lido's consolidation push

Crypto Briefing described Lido as Ethereum's leading liquid staking protocol, and it's been at the center of the shift. The outlet reported that Lido's Curated Module v2 (CMv2) launched on July 27, 2026, with a plan to consolidate over 8 million ETH (worth about $16 billion at the time) from more than 265,000 legacy validators into an estimated 4,000 active 0x02 validators. That 8 million ETH represented around 20% of all staked ETH.

Lido's own numbers moved fast. Its share of staked ETH on 0x02 validators reportedly climbed from approximately 32% to around 52%, according to research findings cited by Crypto Briefing.

CMv2 also added a bonding requirement for curated operators. Under the module, operators have to lock up ETH as collateral, and Crypto Briefing reported that the bond can be seized for violations such as slashing or downtime.

A leaner validator set, on paper

Why does that matter for the network? The same research projects Ethereum will drop from an estimated 880,000 validators to approximately 628,000 once consolidation wraps up. It also points to an expected reduction of about 29% in consensus attestation traffic per epoch.

Those are projections, not outcomes.

Lido isn't stopping at curated operators, either. It's building a Community Staking Module (CSM), which Crypto Briefing said is slated for mainnet in Q4 2026 and is meant to allow permissionless participation by node runners who aren't part of Lido's curated set.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 0x02 validator on Ethereum?

A 0x02 validator is a validator type introduced when Ethereum's Pectra hard fork in May 2025 changed validator rules through EIP-7251. It can carry an effective balance of up to 2,048 ETH, so larger stakes fit into one validator and rewards can compound rather than stall at a fixed ceiling.

What is Lido's CMv2 consolidation plan?

According to Crypto Briefing, Lido's Curated Module v2 launched on July 27, 2026. The plan is to consolidate over 8 million ETH, worth about $16 billion at the time, from more than 265,000 legacy validators into an estimated 4,000 active 0x02 validators. That ETH represented around 20% of all staked ETH.

How could validator consolidation affect Ethereum's network?

Research cited by Crypto Briefing projects the network will drop from an estimated 880,000 validators to approximately 628,000 once consolidation completes. The same research points to an expected reduction of about 29% in consensus attestation traffic per epoch. Both figures are projections, not measured outcomes.
