In brief

  • Manchester United weighs move to re-sign Álvaro Carreras from Real Madrid
  • Carreras joined Real Madrid for €50 million in July 2025 after Benfica stint
  • 23-year-old left-back actively seeking more playing time on six-year deal
  • United earned £7 million sell-on fee from Real Madrid's purchase

The journey from Manchester to Madrid

Carreras arrived at Manchester United in September 2020 after starting in Real Madrid's famed La Fabrica academy. Yet he never broke through at Old Trafford. He made zero senior appearances for the club, a stark reminder of United's struggles to develop young talent.

The club released him in 2024. Carreras left United for Benfica for roughly €6 million, a fraction of what he would eventually be worth.

From Benfica to Real Madrid

In Lisbon, Carreras did what he couldn't do in Manchester: he played. He performed well enough that Real Madrid decided to sign him, purchasing him from Benfica in July 2025 for €50 million. Madrid also signed him to a six-year contract, locking him in until 2031.

United, for their part, collected an estimated £7 million sell-on fee from that deal. A modest return on a player they once developed.

The return question

Reports from April 2026 indicate Carreras is actively looking for more playing time. Real Madrid's depth at left-back has limited his opportunities, and the young defender wants consistent minutes.

That search has put both Manchester United and Arsenal on alert. For United, it's a chance to correct a past mistake. But Madrid won't make it easy — Carreras is under contract until 2031, meaning Madrid have absolutely no pressure to sell cheap.

Whether United can afford to bring him back, and whether Carreras would accept a return to a club that never gave him a chance, remains an open question.
