In brief

  • Metaplex launched MPL-3643, a Solana token standard for permissioned real-world assets and securities.
  • MPL-3643's onchain controls cover investor eligibility, jurisdictional limits, lockups and transfer restrictions.
  • MPL-3643 is built on Token-2022, the Solana Attestation Service and sRFC 37, per Crypto Briefing.
  • MPL-3643 remains in limited-access alpha; Metaplex hasn't announced broad public availability.

What MPL-3643 does

Metaplex modeled the standard on Ethereum's ERC-3643, which Crypto Briefing described as the go-to framework for compliant tokenized securities on Ethereum. The Solana version is meant to bring equivalent functionality to the network, built natively on Solana's own architecture.

It isn't built from scratch. The standard leans on three existing pieces of Solana infrastructure (the Token-2022 program, the Solana Attestation Service and sRFC 37), and according to the report those components handle compliance enforcement without adding significant per-transaction costs.

There's also support for reusable investor verifications. Through partnerships with trusted identity services, an investor who completes one compliance check can use it across multiple token offerings, Crypto Briefing reported.

Composability and integrations

Metaplex founder Stephen Hess has said the goal is a compliance framework that doesn't break Solana's composability, according to Crypto Briefing's account of his comments.

That's where the integrations come in. Crypto Briefing reported that MPL-3643 will work with Orca, Raydium, Jupiter, Phantom and Solflare from launch. In practice, the report said, compliant assets can plug into existing trading venues and wallet infrastructure rather than being confined to custom-built platforms.

From NFTs to securities

Metaplex isn't a new name on Solana. It launched in 2021 as the network's foundational layer for digital assets, mostly focused on NFTs, and its protocol powered the minting, trading and metadata standards that defined Solana's NFT ecosystem.

MPL-3643 moves that same team into permissioned assets. For now, issuers and developers can request access through Metaplex's website, but broad public availability hasn't been announced.

It's not generally available yet.
