In brief

  • MicroStrategy added $225 million to cash reserves via MSTR stock sales July 13-19
  • USD reserve now totals $3.225 billion as of July 19
  • Bitcoin holdings remain at 843,775 BTC (4% of total supply)
  • Second consecutive week of stock liquidation over Bitcoin sales

MSTR Sale Nets $263.5 Million

Strategy sold 2,732,318 shares of MSTR common stock between July 13 and July 19, netting $263.5 million in gross proceeds. After accounting for other factors, the firm added $225 million to its cash reserves from the transaction. This approach mirrors the firm's actions the previous week, when it raised $466.7 million through issuing common stock.

The pattern signals a clear priority: preserve Bitcoin holdings at all costs.

Bitcoin Remains Off-Limits

Strategy holds its full 843,775 BTC stack, representing roughly 4% of Bitcoin's fixed 21-million-coin supply. The firm acquired these holdings at an average price of $75,476 per coin, leaving it with an unrealized loss of roughly $9.6 billion at current prices.

The restraint is notable. Strategy's board approved a capital framework in late June permitting the sale of up to $1.25 billion in Bitcoin. Yet the company has exercised this option sparingly. The firm has decreased its BTC stack on just six occasions since 2020—three of which occurred in 2026 alone, including a sale of 3,588 BTC for roughly $216 million between late June and early July.

Capital Strategy Prioritizes Liquidity

The dual-track approach—raising cash through equity sales while preserving Bitcoin—reflects the firm's capital structure. Strategy issues both common and preferred stock. Preferred shareholders receive dividend payments before common stockholders, creating an incentive to fund operations without liquidating the Bitcoin treasury.

This week's stock sale demonstrates that Strategy can access liquidity without breaching its Bitcoin reserve. The $3.225 billion cash position provides a substantial buffer for operations and strategic initiatives. For a firm that has held the majority of its Bitcoin stack for years, the reluctance to sell at current prices underscores conviction in the asset's long-term value.
