In brief

  • MicroStrategy holds 843,706 BTC with $10.8 billion unrealized loss, worst on record.
  • Stock fell 77% from peak; average acquisition cost $75,700 per coin.
  • CEO Saylor attributes Bitcoin weakness to $400 billion capital migration toward AI infrastructure.
  • Company sold 32 BTC in May to fund preferred stock dividend distributions.

The Worst Loss on Record

MicroStrategy's unrealized loss of $10.8 billion is the worst the firm has recorded since it first started buying Bitcoin in August 2020. The company's average acquisition cost sits at approximately $75,700 per Bitcoin. MicroStrategy's stock has collapsed 77% from peak highs, amplifying the pain for shareholders who've backed the firm's leveraged Bitcoin strategy.

The optics grew more complicated in late May. MicroStrategy sold 32 BTC at an average price of $77,135, generating about $2.5 million. The proceeds went toward distributing dividends on the company's STRC preferred stock, raising questions about forced liquidation during a period of significant losses.

Capital Flight and the AI Bet

Michael Saylor has pointed to what he describes as a significant capital migration estimated at around $400 billion flowing into AI infrastructure as an explanation for Bitcoin's struggles. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have experienced outflows during this period, which aligns with the idea that money is moving elsewhere.

MicroStrategy's predicament reflects a broader structural issue. The company historically traded at a premium to the value of its underlying Bitcoin holdings because investors were paying for the convenience and the leverage. When Bitcoin momentum stalls, that premium evaporates — and the leverage cuts both ways.

MicroStrategy remains by far the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, making its performance a barometer for institutional appetite for leveraged crypto exposure. The $10.8 billion loss signals that appetite has weakened considerably.
