Ecosystem over exchange

Mirae Asset Consulting increased its stake in Korbit to 97.15%, completing the acquisition after receiving regulatory approval from South Korea's Fair Trade Commission. The rebrand to Digital X signals a departure from Korbit's identity as a standalone exchange.

Mirae plans to build an investment ecosystem in which real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional assets, and digital assets are seamlessly interconnected. The name itself carries symbolic weight: Mirae says the X represents "an uncharted future and the limitless possibilities created when different forms of value intersect and converge."

Mirae's vision is to position Digital X as an infrastructure layer rather than just another exchange competing for trading volumes. This distinction matters. Instead of chasing market share in a crowded Korean crypto market, Mirae intends to create connective tissue between asset classes.

"We intend to combine Mirae Asset's extensive global investment expertise with Korbit's digital asset capabilities to promote the sound and sustainable growth of the digital asset industry in Korea and globally." — Mirae Asset, via email to CoinDesk

Market position and compliance

Korbit currently holds less than 1% of South Korea's domestic crypto market, far behind giants Upbit and Bithumb. That underdog position may actually align with Mirae's strategy. The company stressed that the goal is not to overtake any other company or exchange, but to promote sustainable growth of the digital assets industry in South Korea.

Digital X will strictly comply with AML, KYC, and fraud-detection standards across all areas. Regulatory compliance anchors the entire vision. Mirae doesn't have any plans to snap up remaining shares and wants to focus solely on strengthening Digital X's competitiveness.

The rebrand signals a fundamental rethinking of what a crypto exchange can be in a mature financial market. Mirae isn't trying to out-trade Upbit. It's building plumbing.
