Tokyo Expansion and Leadership
Point72 currently employs approximately 54 people in Japan, representing about 1.3% of its roughly 4,100-person global workforce. In early 2025, the firm relocated its Tokyo office to Otemachi One Tower, nearly doubling its physical footprint. The firm first opened a Japan office back in 2011 and has signaled expansion ambitions before — in September 2017, Point72 announced plans to double its Tokyo staff from around 30 to more than 60.
In August 2025, Point72 hired Shinji Ogawa from JPMorgan to serve as Head of Japan, with Ogawa officially starting in November 2025. Ogawa reports to Marc Desmidt, the firm's Asia-Pacific head. The appointment signals serious commitment to the region.
The Governance Tailwind
Japan's corporate governance reforms, which have been accelerating since the Tokyo Stock Exchange began pressuring companies trading below book value to improve capital efficiency, have created a wave of share buybacks, dividend increases, and strategic restructurings. This environment has created opportunities for active managers and hedge funds positioned to capitalize on structural shifts in how Japanese corporations allocate capital and return value to shareholders.
Point72's founder Steve Cohen signaled this direction years ago. In a 2023 interview with Nikkei, Cohen indicated plans for roughly 20% headcount growth in Japan, suggesting the current expansion is part of a longer-term strategy rather than a sudden pivot.
Talent Development
Roughly half of the firm's Japan-based portfolio managers started through its LaunchPoint program, an internal incubator for emerging managers. Point72 also runs the Point72 Academy, which serves a similar talent development function. This infrastructure suggests the firm is building not just headcount, but a sustainable pipeline of investment talent in the region.
