Ripple Prime opens 24/7 swaps tied to Trade.xyz perpetuals on Hyperliquid
In brief
- Ripple Prime acts as principal counterparty on 24/7 swaps referencing more than 100 traditional markets.
- Trade.xyz perpetuals on Hyperliquid underpin the swaps; RLUSD is accepted as collateral, subject to jurisdiction.
- 0xArchive's $59.4 billion September figure covers all Trade.xyz volume, not Ripple client flow.
- Position sizes, haircuts, margin schedules and default protections were not disclosed by Ripple.
How the product works
Ripple offers consolidated margining across the supported asset classes and accepts RLUSD as eligible collateral (subject to jurisdiction). It runs through Ripple Prime's British Virgin Islands entity. Other regions are planned.
The product builds on Ripple Prime's February Hyperliquid integration and the total-return swaps on equities, indices and digital assets that Ripple announced in August. Virtu's Scotte Moegling pointed to the efficiency of 24/7 cross-margining, per CryptoSlate's account.
There's a plumbing detail worth flagging. Trade.xyz perpetuals settle in USDC on Hyperliquid, while RLUSD serves as Ripple Prime client collateral, so the two run under separate arrangements. RLUSD is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York-regulated trust company, and Ripple's Oct. 8 dashboard reported $2.6 billion in reserves against over $2.4 billion in circulation (105.8% coverage on issuer-reported balances).
The venue behind the swaps
According to 0xArchive, Trade.xyz handled $59.4 billion of perpetual volume in September, 23.9% of Hyperliquid's total, across 110 listed markets. Weekend volume averaged $541 million a day. None of that is Ripple client flow; they're venue-wide numbers.
Weekend pricing is the hard part. Trade.xyz's oracle references conventional prices during external sessions and switches to internal order-book pricing when those inputs go quiet, adjusting toward the book over 30 minutes. For Tesla, the spec lists a plus or minus 5% discovery bound with two resets in each direction.
An 0xArchive study of 614 market-weekends (funded by the Hyperliquid Policy Center, with a $1 million minimum of weekend volume per observation) found the final weekend price closer to the reopening price than the Friday close in 70.7% of cases. Median absolute error fell from 113.3 to 53.4 basis points.
What Ripple didn't disclose
The announcement didn't disclose position sizes, Virtu's volumes, collateral haircuts, margin schedules or default protections.
Ripple's general risk disclosures cover collateral calls, basis risk, liquidity constraints, counterparty and insolvency exposure, operational failures and stablecoin depegging. A March 2026 Bank for International Settlements summary on margin liquidity named leverage, concentration, interconnectedness and rapid collateral calls as vulnerabilities, citing Archegos and the 2022 UK pension crisis.
On the regulatory side, the CFTC issued guidance on 24/7 trading in May. In June, the SEC and CFTC requested comment on portfolio-margin harmonization across securities, futures and swaps.
Frequently asked questions
Is the $59 billion figure Ripple's trading volume?
No. According to 0xArchive, Trade.xyz handled $59.4 billion of perpetual volume on Hyperliquid in September, 23.9% of Hyperliquid's total. Those are venue-wide figures, not volume from Ripple clients. Ripple hasn't disclosed position sizes or Virtu's volumes.
What collateral does Ripple Prime accept for the swaps?
Ripple accepts RLUSD as eligible collateral, subject to jurisdiction, and offers consolidated margining across the supported asset classes. The Trade.xyz perpetuals the swaps reference settle separately in USDC on Hyperliquid.
How are the swaps priced when traditional markets are closed?
Trade.xyz's oracle uses conventional prices during external trading sessions. When those inputs go quiet it switches to internal order-book pricing, adjusting toward the book over 30 minutes. An 0xArchive study funded by the Hyperliquid Policy Center found the final weekend price was closer to the reopening price than the Friday close in 70.7% of 614 market-weekends.
