Solana Accelerate Shanghai postponed after registrations exceed local cap, Liu says
In brief
- Solana Accelerate Shanghai was postponed after pre-registration exceeded a local attendance cap, Lily Liu said.
- Registrations quadrupled overnight following event publicity, Liu wrote in a Friday X post.
- Organizers postponed the event to comply with local requirements, according to Liu.
- Shanghai was scheduled to open a four-city Accelerate China tour, per the event's website.
What Liu said
Liu kept the explanation short. According to her Friday X post, event registration quadrupled overnight once publicity for the event went out, and the count ended up above the attendance limit organizers had registered with local authorities.
By her account, it came down to the headcount.
That's the whole stated reason. Liu wrote that organizers made the call to postpone so the event would stay within local rules (her words are quoted below):
organizers decided to postpone the event to “comply with local requirements.”
A four-city tour, and a familiar problem
Shanghai was scheduled to open Solana's four-city Accelerate China tour, according to the event's website. Hangzhou was listed for Sunday, Shenzhen for Tuesday and Beijing for Thursday.
It isn't the first time a Solana gathering in China has run into capacity limits. In October 2025, a Solana event in Shenzhen was cut short due to venue capacity and public-safety concerns, according to Solana's Chinese-language community account on X.
The timing is notable too. The Shanghai postponement followed Solana executives' promotion of a new Shanghai office earlier in the week.
The regulatory backdrop
China prohibits a range of crypto-related services, including token fundraising, trading and mining. In February, the People's Bank of China and seven other agencies reinforced those restrictions in a notice that added new bans, including on unauthorized issuance of yuan-pegged stablecoins.
Those rules are context here. They're not the cause Liu gave for the Shanghai decision, which she put down to registrations quadrupling overnight and blowing past the attendance limit organizers had filed with local authorities.
