Stellar sets 217.4 TPS throughput record, per Chainspect data

In brief

  • Chainspect recorded a 217.4 TPS peak for Stellar over a 100-block window.
  • Stellar's previous record of about 211 TPS stood for less than two weeks.
  • U.Today linked the jump to institutional RWA inflows and the Protocol 28 upgrade.
  • Stellar ranked fourth by tokenized RWA value at $3.38 billion, per U.Today.

What U.Today says drove the peak

U.Today attributed the rise in throughput to an influx of institutional capital rather than artificial stress tests. That's the outlet's analysis, not a confirmed cause.

On the technical side, the report named the Protocol 28 (Adapter) upgrade, activated in mid-September, as the main driver. It introduced an accelerated consensus mechanism that lets validators begin voting before the full transaction batch has been delivered. An update to the Soroban smart contract platform also improved how it handles large data sets, per U.Today.

"Stellar reached 217.4 TPS on September 26, less than two weeks after setting its previous peak"

RWA funds concentrated on a small set of projects

According to U.Today, Stellar ranked fourth worldwide by tokenized RWA value as of September 27, at $3.38 billion (behind Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana). It's spread across just 72 active RWA projects, an average of $47 million each. The same figure was $5.7 million on Ethereum and $1.4 million on Solana.

One fund carries much of the weight.

The Spiko Amundi Overnight Swap Fund (EUR) held $1.16 billion, more than a third of Stellar's total RWA value, the outlet reported. Ondo U.S. Dollar Yield (USDY) sat at $536 million and Franklin Templeton's tokenized BENJI at $431 million. U.Today said most of the transaction flow came from tokenized government bonds and European treasury instruments. Stablecoins on Stellar had a $437.73 million market cap and $9.44 billion in monthly transfer volume, according to the same report.

Still well below its ceiling

The record isn't the fastest in crypto. Chainspect data showed Stellar consistently processing 120–180 TPS, compared with about 20 TPS for Ethereum, while Solana and Aptos have posted record figures above 11,000 TPS.

With a theoretical ceiling of 3,351 TPS (again per Chainspect, as reported by U.Today), Stellar's operating at less than 10% of its capacity. The network offers fixed fees of $0.0001 and settlement finality of about 5 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What was Stellar's new transaction speed record?

Chainspect data, as reported by U.Today, showed that Stellar reached a peak of 217.4 transactions per second over a 100-block window on September 26. The previous record of about 211 TPS (also per Chainspect, as reported by U.Today) stood for less than two weeks.

What does U.Today say caused the record?

U.Today attributed the rise to institutional capital inflows rather than stress tests. It named the Protocol 28 (Adapter) upgrade, which lets validators begin voting before a full transaction batch arrives, as the main technical driver.

How close is Stellar to its maximum capacity?

According to Chainspect data cited by U.Today, Stellar has a theoretical ceiling of 3,351 TPS and was operating at less than 10% of that capacity. The same Chainspect data, as reported by U.Today, showed it consistently processing 120–180 TPS.
