Strategy Inc. tops Nasdaq-100 with 48% gain as Bitcoin rally accelerates
In brief
- Strategy Inc. posts 48% gain over 30 days, topping Nasdaq-100 index
- Company holds ~845,050 Bitcoin worth roughly $67.6 billion
- Stock amplifies Bitcoin price movements beyond 1:1 as high-beta proxy
- Institutional investors access Bitcoin exposure through MSTR within regulatory constraints
The Bitcoin Treasury Play
Strategy Inc. holds approximately 845,050 Bitcoin, acquired at an average price of roughly $75,412 per coin. At current prices with Bitcoin approaching $80,000, the company's stash is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $67.6 billion. That average acquisition cost means the position is currently deep in the green.
The company pivoted away from its legacy business-intelligence software operations back in 2020 and transformed into a publicly traded Bitcoin treasury vehicle. Today, Strategy Inc. is, for all practical purposes, a one-asset company. Its software business still exists, but it's a rounding error compared to Bitcoin holdings.
High-Beta Equity Proxy
Strategy Inc.'s structure creates what finance types call a "high-beta equity proxy" for Bitcoin price movements. When Bitcoin goes up, MSTR tends to go up more. When Bitcoin goes down, MSTR tends to go down more. This happens because the company uses debt and equity raises to acquire more Bitcoin, amplifying its exposure beyond what a simple 1:1 holding would deliver.
The stock closed at $153.92 on September 18 after surging 16.39% in a single session. For context, Meta was the second-place finisher in the Nasdaq-100 with roughly 21.9% gain over the same 30-day period.
Institutional Tailwinds
Many institutional investors—whether pension funds, endowments, or mutual funds—face restrictions on holding Bitcoin directly. MSTR offers a workaround. The company's publicly traded equity structure allows these investors to gain leveraged Bitcoin exposure within their existing regulatory and fiduciary frameworks.
Recent policy signals have added momentum. The House Financial Services Committee recently voted to advance a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill. Separately, the SEC granted an exemption related to tokenized stock trading. Neither directly mandates Strategy Inc. holdings, but both signal shifting institutional appetite for crypto-adjacent assets.
Bitcoin itself has been climbing toward the $80,000 level, providing the underlying tailwind for MSTR's outsize gains. The dynamic is straightforward: as long as Bitcoin rallies, Strategy's leveraged position amplifies those moves for equity investors who can't (or won't) hold the asset directly.
