In brief

  • Tesla signed a power purchase agreement with KKR-backed Stellar Renewable Power for Arizona solar and battery storage
  • Project pairs 1 GW solar farm with 1 GW/4 GWh battery storage in Navajo County, Arizona
  • Stellar received local regulatory approval in December 2024; contract terms undisclosed

The deal and the developer

Stellar Renewable Power is a platform KKR established in 2021 specifically to build utility-scale solar and storage assets. The Arizona project marks a significant step forward for the firm, which secured a Special Use Permit from Navajo County in December 2024, clearing a key local regulatory hurdle needed to move toward construction.

Neither Tesla nor KKR has publicly disclosed the specifics of the contract. Capacity commitments, pricing terms, and duration remain confidential. That opacity is typical in large corporate power purchases, though it limits public visibility into how Tesla is structuring its renewable energy sourcing strategy.

Why it matters for capital markets

For KKR, landing Tesla as an offtaker is crucial. A creditworthy buyer signals to lenders and investors that the project can generate predictable revenue. Without that signal, financing utility-scale renewable projects becomes far harder in a competitive landscape where construction timelines, permitting delays, interconnection queues, and supply chain constraints have plagued large-scale renewable projects in recent years.

Tesla's role extends beyond purchasing power. The company already runs multiple Virtual Power Plant programs across Arizona that aggregate customer-owned Powerwalls into a coordinated network. Homeowners who participate earn between $400 and $800 per Powerwall installation annually for allowing Tesla to orchestrate their batteries during stress events. Tesla has also deployed Megapack systems at various solar sites throughout Arizona, positioning itself on both the supply and demand sides of the state's energy grid.

The Stellar deal fits that pattern. It locks in renewable supply while expanding Tesla's footprint in Arizona's energy ecosystem.
