Strategic Capital for Payments and Products
Mercado Bitcoin has evolved from a digital asset exchange into a financial platform offering trading, tokenized investment products, credit and lending, stablecoin-powered payments, banking infrastructure, and cross-border services. The platform holds more than 10 licenses across Brazil and Europe, including a payment institution license from Brazil's central bank. It has issued more than 2 billion reais (roughly $387 million) in tokenized assets.
The $20 million will accelerate expansion across multiple fronts. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino and the company's leadership see the investment as a way to deepen Tether's presence in Latin America's growing crypto and fintech ecosystem. The capital targets expanding payments infrastructure, scaling tokenized investment products for retail and institutional users, growing lending capabilities, advancing on-chain capital markets, and pursuing international expansion beyond Brazil.
Positioning in the Region
Mercado Bitcoin's multi-license structure and retail user base (4.5 million) make it a strategic partner for Tether's regional strategy. The exchange's payment institution license positions it to offer regulated stablecoin-powered payments across Brazil's financial system. Mercado Bitcoin Chairman and CEO Roberto Dagnoni leads the platform as it scales both consumer and institutional offerings.
This investment reflects Tether's broader push to embed USDT into payment rails and financial infrastructure across emerging markets. Rather than a passive stake, the capital directly funds product development and regulatory expansion—areas where Mercado Bitcoin's existing licenses and user base provide a foundation.
