Tim Draper Predicts Bitcoin Could Go "Infinite" as Adoption Accelerates

In brief

  • Tim Draper predicted Bitcoin could go 'infinite' against the dollar as adoption accelerates
  • Block's Square enabled Bitcoin payments for millions of U.S. merchants starting March
  • Draper's prior $250,000 price targets have been repeatedly delayed since 2018
  • Venture capitalist compares banking-to-Bitcoin shift to the horse-to-automobile transition
  • Bitcoin traded under $64,000 as of Wednesday

Adoption as the Core Driver

Draper made the prediction on X after commenting on the growing adoption of Bitcoin payments. He then predicted that a run on banks would follow Bitcoin adoption, eventually leading to a fundamental transformation of the financial system. In a March interview, Draper compared the transition from traditional banking to Bitcoin with the shift from horses to automobiles, framing the change as inevitable rather than speculative.

Draper's thesis rests on a vision where merchants and consumers gradually shift to Bitcoin as a medium of exchange. The venture capitalist has argued that this transition mirrors a historical precedent—though the timeline and speed remain uncertain.

Quantum Computing and Banking Vulnerability

In June, Draper argued that quantum computing is more likely to compromise traditional banks before it compromises Bitcoin. His argument diverges from mainstream cryptographic consensus, which holds that Bitcoin's ECDSA signatures are theoretically vulnerable to quantum computing, though no practical quantum threat to Bitcoin currently exists. Draper's framing emphasizes the relative fragility of legacy banking infrastructure compared to Bitcoin's distributed ledger.

A Track Record of Delayed Timelines

Draper's history of Bitcoin price predictions warrants scrutiny. His original major Bitcoin forecast came in 2014, when he predicted that BTC would reach $10,000 within several years—a target eventually crossed in November 2017. In 2018, he forecast that Bitcoin would reach $250,000 by the end of 2022, but the timeline was pushed back. In November 2024, Draper was still calling for Bitcoin to reach $120,000 by the end of that year and $250,000 in 2025—deadlines that have now passed.

Draper's history of repeatedly pushing back his $250,000 target—from 2022 to 2024 to 2025—has raised questions among analysts about the reliability of his timelines, even as his long-term bullish thesis on Bitcoin adoption remains consistent. The path from roughly $64,000 to $250,000 would require an increase of nearly 290%. Bitcoin is trading under $64,000 on Wednesday.

Regional Innovation and Crypto Investment

Cryptocurrency and blockchain investment have contributed to the outperformance of Texas and Oklahoma in the Draper Innovation Index. Texas, for instance, climbed to fourth place in the March 2026 U.S. ranking, while Oklahoma rose to 15th place. Draper cites these regional shifts as evidence that Bitcoin adoption and crypto investment are reshaping the competitive landscape for innovation hubs.
