Upbit lists Metaplex and Nexus tokens, signaling South Korea's appetite for altcoins
In brief
- Upbit added MPLX and NEX without disclosing exact pairs or start date.
- Metaplex powers 99% of Solana tokens and NFTs, facilitating over 923 million asset mints.
- Nexus is a Layer 1 blockchain using zero-knowledge virtual machine technology, recently listed on Coinbase.
Metaplex's infrastructure role
Metaplex is the infrastructure backbone for token and NFT creation on Solana. The platform claims to power roughly 99% of tokens and NFTs on the Solana blockchain, having facilitated the minting of over 923 million assets. Across its history, Metaplex has generated more than $10 billion in transaction values.
The MPLX token itself serves a governance function within the Metaplex DAO. About 50% of the protocol's revenue gets funneled into MPLX buybacks, aligning token holder interests with platform performance. Until now, MPLX has been trading on smaller venues like LBank, Raydium, and Orca, with a recent price hovering around $0.02.
Nexus and the zero-knowledge bet
Nexus is a Layer 1 blockchain focused on verifiable finance and high-performance trading. The tech stack leans on zkVM, or zero-knowledge virtual machine technology, which allows computation to be verified without revealing underlying data. NEX has a total token supply of 100 trillion, with 60% currently circulating. The token previously received a listing on Coinbase Advanced in May 2026.
What Upbit's listing signals
Korean traders have a reputation for piling into newly listed altcoins with enthusiasm that borders on competitive sport. The so-called "Kimchi premium," where Korean exchange prices diverge from global averages, is a recurring phenomenon. Upbit's decision to list both tokens suggests confidence in their long-term utility, though it also flags them as candidates for the kind of volume spikes and price swings that Korean retail traders are known for driving. The exact launch timing remains unclear—a detail that may matter more than the listing itself.
