US tech giants race to build data centers in Australia as AirTrunk scales capacity

Capacity Surge Across Five Campuses
AirTrunk's total operational capacity across its five Australian campuses now exceeds 1.2 GW. The company's expansion shows no signs of slowing. The MEL2 campus in Melbourne, announced in December 2025, will deliver over 354 MW of capacity with an investment of more than A$5 billion. Simultaneously, AirTrunk's SYD3 project in Sydney is targeting over 400 MW, with A$4.3 billion in loan talks reportedly underway to finance the development.
These projects reflect a broader shift in how tech companies think about infrastructure placement. For US tech companies trying to serve customers across the Asia-Pacific, Australia offers proximity to Asian markets and predictability without geopolitical risk.
Renewable Energy as Competitive Advantage
Australia's abundant solar and wind resources offer a credible path to powering data centers with clean energy. This isn't theoretical. A 25 MW Mulwala Solar Farm in New South Wales, backed by both Google and AirTrunk under a power purchase agreement signed in 2023, is nearing grid connection.
The energy angle matters. Tech firms face mounting pressure to demonstrate carbon-neutral operations, and Australia's renewable capacity makes that commitment credible.
Infrastructure Bottlenecks Remain
Not everything is smooth. Australia's planning and permitting processes are slow, lagging behind comparable timelines in Asia by roughly two years according to industry assessments. Australia's transmission infrastructure wasn't designed with hyperscale data centers in mind, and upgrading it takes time and coordination.
These constraints won't kill the boom. They'll just slow it. AirTrunk and its clients are betting that Australia's long-term advantages—clean power, stable governance, and Asian proximity—outweigh the near-term friction of permitting delays and grid upgrades.
