USDC issuer Circle plans entry into about 40 emerging markets, Crypto Briefing reports
In brief
- Circle plans to enter about 40 emerging and developing markets, according to Crypto Briefing.
- Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East are the target regions.
- The plan follows a $400 million Tazapay acquisition and a $100 million Binance investment.
- USDC circulation reached $73.3 billion in Q2 2026, up 19% year over year, Circle reported.
Two deals came first
The announcement didn't come out of nowhere. It followed Circle's $400 million acquisition of Tazapay, a Singapore-based company focused on cross-border payments (the deal is expected to close in 2027, pending approvals). The second transaction was a $100 million strategic investment in Circle from Binance, according to the same report.
The deals pair a pending payments acquisition with fresh capital from Binance.
USDC growth and market share
Circle reported that USDC circulation hit $73.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026. That's a 19% increase from the same period a year earlier, based on the company's figures as reported by Crypto Briefing.
The issuer is still a clear number two. Crypto Briefing puts Circle at roughly 25% of the global stablecoin market, while Tether's USDT sits at nearly 60% (more than double Circle's share, by that count).
Big gap.
Allaire's regulatory pitch
So why emerging markets? In Crypto Briefing's account of Allaire's view, blockchain technology is moving past experimentation into mainstream scaling, and the demand is coming from individuals and businesses who want access to the internet-based economy.
He also pointed to two regulatory developments he sees as potential advantages for Circle. The first is the federal bank charter Circle obtained in July, as reported by Crypto Briefing. The second is the US Genius Act, which the outlet said is expected to take effect in January 2027.
Allaire's argument is that these could position USDC as a legitimate digital dollar. It's a regulatory case as much as a commercial one, and he made it in front of the IMF and World Bank audience in Bangkok. Circle hasn't named the specific countries among the roughly 40 markets it's targeting, at least not in the report.
