In brief

  • Lookonchain: an anonymous investor sold 410.14 BTC, worth about $34.16 million, on Hyperliquid.
  • The same investor bought 14,341 ETH, worth about $36.14 million, via decentralized exchanges.
  • The investor's identity and the reason for the trades remain unknown.
  • ETH futures volume reached about $23.15 billion in 24 hours versus $1.54 billion in spot, per CoinGlass.
  • ETH futures liquidations totaled $48.12 million, with shorts accounting for $38.11 million.

How the trades moved on-chain

The flows didn't come through a single wallet. On-chain data showed several transfers of UBTC (a tokenized form of Bitcoin) from Hyperunit to the investor's addresses, and one of those addresses received 874,576 USDC through Hyperliquid's Bridge2 contract.

The ETH side came in pieces, too. One linked address received about 865.07 ETH, worth $2.2 million, from Uniswap's V2DutchOrderReactor contract, while another wallet picked up 827.23 ETH (around $2.1 million) from the same contract.

Put together, it's roughly $34 million of BTC sold and $36 million of ETH bought.

ETH outpaced BTC on the day

At the time of the report, Ethereum traded near $2,553, up about 1.85% over 24 hours. Bitcoin rose 0.93% over the same period. The daily gain doesn't cover the week, though: ETH was still down about 6.36% over the previous seven days, so the one-day move came off a weaker base.

Derivatives carried the volume

Futures did most of the trading. According to CoinGlass, Ethereum futures volume was around $23.15 billion over 24 hours, compared with $1.54 billion in spot trading. Open interest in the ETH futures market sat around $32.06 billion, per the same CoinGlass data.

Liquidations were lopsided. About $48.12 million in ETH futures positions were liquidated over 24 hours, with short positions making up $38.11 million of that total and longs accounting for $10 million. That's shorts taking most of the hit on a day ETH moved higher.

None of the reported data links the anonymous investor's spot trades to those futures positions. We don't know the investor's identity, and we don't know the motive behind the BTC sale or the ETH buy.
