A Familiar Path Back
Theate's initial loan spell at Bologna was successful enough to generate significant transfer interest, which ultimately led to his departure to Rennes. From there, Eintracht Frankfurt signed him permanently in February 2025 for a reported €13 million with potential add-ons reaching €6 million. The deal includes a 15% sell-on clause for Frankfurt, and Theate's contract with the German club runs until 2029.
Despite the investment, Theate found himself in a crowded defensive rotation at Frankfurt. Playing time became the issue. At 25, he's at the stage of his career where sitting on the bench isn't an option he's willing to entertain.
Interest from Across Europe
Before this move materialized, other clubs came knocking. Nottingham Forest had expressed interest in bringing Theate to the Premier League, while Atlético Madrid also reportedly came calling at one point, though Frankfurt turned down that approach. Bologna's return offer, backed by the option to make the move permanent, proved more appealing.
Theate brings genuine pedigree to this loan. He has 36 caps for Belgium and one goal to his name. For Bologna, getting a player who's already proven himself in Serie A—and who genuinely wants to be there—offers both immediate depth and a low-risk pathway to a permanent signing if he performs.
