Base Azul upgrade cuts withdrawal times to one day on mainnet

In brief

  • Azul is Base's first fully independent mainnet upgrade, now live on Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 chain
  • Withdrawal finality drops from seven days to one day, eliminating a major user friction point
  • Multiproof security system combines trusted execution environment and zero-knowledge proofs for speed and cryptographic robustness

Security through dual proofs

Azul combines two different types of cryptographic verification: trusted execution environment (TEE) proofs and zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. Both systems must confirm a transaction before funds move, which makes the network harder to exploit while simultaneously accelerating legitimate withdrawals.

This dual-proof design addresses a long-standing pain point. Seven-day exit windows have pushed some users toward centralized bridges or competing chains. The one-day settlement window removes that friction without compromising security.

Network readiness and testing

Base ran a $250,000 bug bounty program through Immunefi that concluded on May 4, 2026, ahead of the mainnet launch. The upgrade was announced around April 21-22, 2026, with testnet going live almost immediately after.

Node operators migrated to new streamlined clients: base-reth-node and base-consensus. These clients were designed to reduce operational overhead while maintaining the security properties of the upgraded network.

Scale and significance

Base held over $7 billion in deposits at the time of the Azul upgrade. The timing matters: a network of this scale introducing faster, independently-verified withdrawal mechanics removes a structural barrier that has historically constrained layer-2 adoption.

Azul positions Base toward Stage 2 decentralization, the point at which a rollup's security relies entirely on its proof system rather than any trusted party. This shift marks a maturation step for the broader Ethereum scaling ecosystem.
