Binance's CZ responds to Vitalik Buterin's AI security warning, U.Today reports

In brief

  • CZ responded to Buterin's concerns about AI-enhanced risks to crypto systems, U.Today reported.
  • Buterin reportedly urged the industry to adopt AI-resistant cryptography before threats materialize.
  • CZ rated his own math skills 0.01/100 against Buterin's 99.99/100.
  • Binance and Buterin have not announced any partnership.

What Buterin reportedly said

According to U.Today's account, Buterin warned the crypto community against complacency about advanced threats to existing cryptographic standards. The outlet said he named both quantum computing and artificial intelligence as things that might make current encryption methods obsolete (which would put digital wallets and blockchain systems at risk). That's U.Today's description of his warning. It isn't a direct quote.

The same report says Buterin wants the industry to actively seek out and integrate AI-resistant cryptography before those threats become real. U.Today also paraphrased him as saying a growing number of security researchers agree defenses should go up now, not after the threats appear.

CZ's reply

CZ's response was self-deprecating. He rated his own math skills at 0.01/100 and gave Buterin 99.99/100, a remark U.Today called humorous.

That's the whole exchange as reported.

The outlet went further, writing that CZ's reply suggested Buterin's mathematical abilities combined with Binance's resources and market impact could produce significant progress. That's U.Today's interpretation. Neither founder is reported to have said it.

No partnership on the table

U.Today's headline asks whether the two founders will "unite" against AI, and nothing in the report supports that framing. The outlet speculated that a partnership between Buterin and Binance could speed up the creation and adoption of AI-resistant standards, but no such partnership has been announced. The source doesn't confirm that any structured collaboration will happen, either.

The technical framing is the outlet's as well. U.Today wrote that current blockchain systems rely on mathematical problems that are hard for traditional computers but that highly advanced AI might solve quickly. It also said AI development follows a more predictable path than quantum computing, whose timeline is uncertain (it isn't clear whether that view came from Buterin or from U.Today).

For now it's a public exchange between two of crypto's best-known figures. It isn't a roadmap.
