Bitcoin breaks 50-week moving average for first time since November 2025
In brief
- Bitcoin closed above $81,159 on September 20, 2026, marking first weekly close above 50-week MA since November 2025.
- A 6% single-day surge on September 18 triggered the breakout amid whale activity and short liquidations.
- Galaxy Research data: 11 of 13 historical instances of this pattern did not result in new cycle lows.
The Breakout
Bitcoin ended the week of September 20, 2026 at $81,159, crossing above its 50-week moving average of roughly $78,788. The catalyst arrived on September 18, when a 6% single-day surge briefly pushed Bitcoin past $81,200. The move was accompanied by heightened whale activity and a wave of short liquidations.
Since then, Bitcoin has traded in a tight range between $81,000 and $81,450. The consolidation reflects a market still testing conviction after months of underperformance.
Recovery From the Depths
The context matters. Bitcoin hit a cycle low of approximately $58,525 on June 30, 2026, which represented a 53% drawdown from the October 2025 peak above $124,000. The September close means Bitcoin has recovered roughly 39% from that bottom in fewer than three months.
That pace of recovery is noteworthy. Whether it sustains is another matter.
Historical Precedent — But With Caveats
Galaxy Research head Alex Thorn has tracked what happens historically when Bitcoin reclaims this level after a bear-market breakdown. The data covers 13 comparable instances. In 11 of those 13 cases, the reclaim did not result in new cycle lows. Two of those 13 reclaims did eventually give way to new lows.
Prior episodes that followed the same pattern include recoveries in 2015, 2019, and 2023. All three periods saw Bitcoin consolidate above the 50-week moving average before making fresh moves higher. The implication is clear: the historical odds favor sustained recovery, not a false breakout.
But history doesn't trade. Conviction does. Bitcoin's tight range since September 20 suggests the market is still deciding whether this breakout is real.
