Bitcoin holds $64,000 as weak ADP jobs data precedes Friday payrolls

Close-up of digital cryptocurrency market graph showing price fluctuations and trading data.

In brief

  • Bitcoin traded at $64,322 on Coinbase as ADP reported private job growth fell 53% to 44,000 in July
  • Education and health services drove 82% of hiring while leisure, transportation, and mining shed jobs
  • Two-year Treasury yields rose to 4.25% amid 7.0% pay growth for job-switchers, complicating inflation relief expectations
  • Official U.S. employment report at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday represents critical test for Bitcoin's $64,000 support level

The ADP miss and its mixed signals

ADP reported that private employers added 44,000 jobs in July, a 51,000-job drop from June's revised gain. The slowdown was stark. Yet the breakdown revealed tension: education and health services supplied 36,000 of the 44,000 jobs, about 82% of the entire increase. Elsewhere, weakness spread. Leisure and hospitality shed 11,000 jobs, while trade, transportation and utilities lost 8,000. Natural resources and mining lost 6,000.

The headline screams recession risk. But wages tell a different story.

Wage growth and yields push back

Annual pay growth for workers changing jobs accelerated to 7.0% in July from 6.6% in June, while pay growth for workers who stayed in their jobs held at 4.4%. That's not a labor market collapsing under deflation. Treasury yields reflected the ambiguity. The two-year yield rose to 4.25% on August 6 from 4.18% a day earlier, and the 10-year increased to 4.69% from 4.63%.

This is the macro tug-of-war that matters for Bitcoin.

The $64,000 test

Bitcoin was priced at approximately $64,322 on Coinbase early Friday morning and was down 0.33% over 24 hours. The Bureau of Labor Statistics scheduled the July Employment Situation report for 8:30 a.m. ET on August 7. Two scenarios matter. If the official payrolls number confirms ADP's weakness and yields fall, Bitcoin could find support—the classic relief trade. If payrolls disappoint and risk assets sell off together, that's growth-scare territory and a break below $64,000 becomes likely. ADP is an independent measure of private employment and should not be treated as a one-for-one forecast of the government's payroll count.

The data arrives in hours. Until then, Bitcoin sits at the inflection.
