Bitcoin Life secures Guernsey insurance license, launches Bitcoin bonds
In brief
- Bitcoin Life secured full Guernsey insurance license September 17 as international long-term life insurance company.
- Bitcoin-denominated whole-of-life insurance bond enables crypto holders to preserve assets with estate planning features.
- Policyholders may defer or reduce tax liabilities by housing Bitcoin inside regulated insurance bond structure.
How the bond works
A client pays a single premium, either in Bitcoin or fiat currency, and the entire policy value is then held in Bitcoin under institutional custody. The whole-of-life designation means this isn't term insurance that expires after 20 years. It's designed to last as long as the policyholder does and then transfer directly to named beneficiaries upon death, bypassing probate processes.
Founder Peter Lane has described the product as a "forever home" for Bitcoin, positioning the bond as a long-term wealth preservation tool denominated entirely in the asset.
Tax and regulatory structure
Insurance bonds in jurisdictions like Guernsey have long been used by high-net-worth individuals to manage tax obligations on investment gains. By housing Bitcoin inside this structure, policyholders can potentially defer or reduce tax liabilities depending on their home jurisdiction. This approach sidesteps a persistent problem: traditional estate planning tools like wills and trusts were designed for bank accounts, real estate, and stock portfolios, not bearer assets secured by cryptographic keys.
Lane has emphasized that Bitcoin is being integrated into a trusted regulatory structure rather than asking regulators to create something new. BitGo Europe GmbH handles custody, BWCI provides trustee services, Polo Insurance Managers handles oversight, and Carey Olsen provides legal architecture.
The product is aimed at international clients across multiple jurisdictions, which reflects Guernsey's established reputation as a financial center for cross-border wealth structures. This regulatory approach allows crypto holders to preserve long-term positions while addressing a gap in traditional finance.
