Weakness Extends, Not Triggers
Bitcoin traded at $76,695 near press time, down 0.80% over 24 hours and 4.08% over seven days. The decline isn't entirely new. CryptoSlate's coverage reported an intraday low of $76,676 on September 10, ahead of Saturday AI statements. This chronology matters: the weekend's move represents an extension of existing weakness rather than a sell-off wholly attributable to fresh AI warnings.
Still, Bitcoin remains up 22.34% over 30 days. Reported 24-hour trading volume was about $13.44 billion, down 49.98%, signaling reduced conviction in either direction.
AI Safety Calls Overlap with Macro Headwinds
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged slower development and independent evaluators for AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with calls for slower AI development and said his company would follow suit. These statements arrived as tech sentiment faced separate pressure.
OpenAI's initial public offering would be delayed until 2027, citing safety concerns. The combined messaging—slower development, delayed IPOs, safety-first posture—undercuts the narrative of unbounded AI upside that had fueled recent risk appetite.
Fed Meeting and Inflation Data on Tap
Macro risk looms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that final-demand producer prices rose 0.4% in August on a seasonally adjusted basis and 5.4% over the year. Energy prices rose 4.2% and accounted for more than three-fourths of goods price increases.
The Federal Reserve's policy meeting is scheduled for September 15–16, with a press conference on September 16. Rate-cut expectations have been a tailwind for risk assets. Any hawkish surprise or delay in easing could test Bitcoin's technical support levels. Monday's open will signal whether $76,500 holds or if deeper retracement emerges ahead of the Fed decision.
