Bitcoin tops $78,000 as Democrats win control of Congress in midterms
In brief
- Bitcoin rose above $78,000 after briefly dipping below $76,000 as midterm results came in.
- Democrats flipped Senate seats in Iowa, Kansas, Texas, South Carolina and Ohio.
- Bitget Wallet's Lacie Zhang warned the CLARITY Act may slow under a Democratic Congress.
- Macro conditions and onchain demand will likely drive near-term price action, Zhang said.
Democrats take both chambers
Democrats flipped Senate seats in Iowa, Kansas, Texas, South Carolina and Ohio, according to Crypto Briefing. That's a long list. Voters cited inflation, household financial strain and concerns over corruption among the main issues behind the result.
Control of both the House and Senate strengthens the party's ability to oversee the Trump administration, and it's not planning to sit on that power. Democratic leaders have signaled plans to investigate senior administration officials and examine the president's business interests.
The regulatory outlook for crypto is a separate question.
What it means for the CLARITY Act
Bitget Wallet research lead Lacie Zhang warned that a Democratic-controlled Congress may slow market structure legislation, including the CLARITY Act, while increasing scrutiny of the crypto industry. A slower path for that bill isn't a small thing for crypto.
She also offered a counterweight. Divided government could make abrupt policy changes less likely, Zhang said (potentially limiting the immediate market impact of the result).
Macro over politics
Zhang's broader read is that Bitcoin's reaction to the midterms may be driven more by macroeconomic factors than by political changes in Washington.
"Near-term Bitcoin price action is therefore likely to depend more on macro conditions and onchain demand than on the election result itself"
She pointed to history to back that up. Bitcoin finished higher 12 months after each of the last three US midterm elections, according to Zhang, who also noted that the current cycle's drawdown from the October 2025 peak has been around 38%, compared with declines of roughly 67%–73% in previous cycles.
Three elections is a small sample, of course. Still, the numbers explain why Zhang isn't treating the vote as the main driver for BTC, even with a Congress that she warned may slow the CLARITY Act and bring more scrutiny to the crypto industry.
