Brent Crude Breaks $100 as Prediction Markets Price in Higher Oil Gains
In brief
- Brent crude hit $101.09 Wednesday, up 3.2%, breaking $100 for first time in six weeks
- Myriad's $120 contract now trades at 56.5% probability, overtaking $55 side since early September
- Polymarket prices WTI at $100 this month at 59% probability, up nine percentage points
Myriad Flips to the Upside
On Myriad's prediction market, which asks whether crude reaches $120 or falls to $55 first, the $120 side sits at 56.5%, up 15.1 points. The two sides had traded within a few points of each other since mid-August, with $55 ahead for most of that stretch. They crossed at the start of September and have not crossed back.
This reversal matters. The market has taken $12.7 million in volume since March, making it one of Myriad's most-active contracts. Myriad is a prediction market owned by Dastan, Decrypt's parent company.
Polymarket Prices in Momentum
Over on Polymarket, the odds have shifted even more aggressively. WTI touching $100 this month is at 59%, up nine points. Reaching $105 is at 30%, up 25 points. Meanwhile, WTI dropping to $85 is down 33 points to 39%, and every rung below it is in single digits.
The contrast is stark. Reaching $90 sits at 71%, up 21 points — traders see downside as a tail risk now, not the baseline. Myriad's runs until one target is hit, with no deadline, while Polymarket's closes at the end of September.
Geopolitical Pressure Mounting
The rally isn't happening in a vacuum. Saudi officials say Houthi rebels attacked Saudi oil facilities early Tuesday, wounding 73. On the same day, U.S. Central Command destroyed five Iranian oil tankers, after hitting three others on Saturday, in response to Iranian ballistic missile attacks on an American warship.
Supply risks are cascading through the market. Diesel hit a record $5.94 a gallon on Wednesday, beating the high set last week. Gasoline averaged $4.22. Traders on prediction markets are betting that Middle East tensions will keep pushing crude higher, at least through the end of September.
Frequently asked questions
What's a prediction market and how does it work?
Prediction markets let traders buy and sell shares tied to real-world outcomes. Prices reflect collective odds: a $120 contract at 56.5% means traders see a 56.5% chance crude reaches $120. Myriad and Polymarket are decentralized platforms where traders stake capital on outcomes and settle when the event resolves.
Why did Myriad's $120 side flip from trailing to leading?
The $120 side was behind the $55 side for most of mid-August through August's end, but crossed in early September as crude rallied. Brent breaking $100 and Middle East tensions (Houthi attacks, U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers) shifted trader expectations toward higher prices.
How do Myriad and Polymarket differ?
Myriad's crude contract runs indefinitely until one target is hit. Polymarket's WTI contract closes at the end of September, so its odds reflect only near-term expectations. This explains why Polymarket's odds for $100 this month (59%) are higher than Myriad's longer-dated outlook.
