Cardano Enters Dijkstra Era With Multi-Phase Upgrade Roadmap
In brief
- Cardano enters Dijkstra era post-van Rossem hard fork with Constitutional Committee election live
- Constitutional Amendment Portal launches for community alpha testing before next upgrade
- Nested Transactions and Linear Leios targeted for mainnet delivery by end of 2026
- Ouroboros Leios consensus mechanism to roll out across multiple hard fork phases
Governance and Immediate Developments
Intersect, a member-based organization in the Cardano ecosystem, reported that recent weeks brought progress across protocol development, governance, community tooling, and technical delivery. The transition to the Dijkstra era marks a formal shift in the network's upgrade roadmap.
A new parameter update action has opened for voting during this transition period. The Constitutional Committee election is now on-chain, enabling the community to participate in governance decisions. The Constitutional Amendment Portal has opened for community alpha testing, signaling preparation for future constitutional updates.
Van Rossem Accomplishments
The van Rossem intra-era hard fork to Protocol Version 11 was enacted on July 18, delivering several technical improvements. The upgrade brought improvements to Plutus performance, improved ledger consistency, and enhanced node security. These changes lay groundwork for the next phase.
Dijkstra Roadmap and Timeline
The Dijkstra era hard fork will introduce Ouroboros Leios to Cardano, a new consensus mechanism designed to improve throughput and scalability. Planning for the Dijkstra era has begun, including defining a process for community input on future hard forks.
The initial Dijkstra rollout is anticipated to occur across multiple phases, introducing Nested Transactions, Linear Leios, and Peras. The Haskell node team's current objective is to deliver the first two phases, Nested Transactions and Linear Leios, to mainnet by the end of 2026.
Constitutional updates required for the Dijkstra era are expected to follow the hard fork's enactment. The community will have input on the process, reflecting Cardano's decentralized governance model.
Naming and Next Steps
The ecosystem is also deliberating on nomenclature for future hard forks. The current intention is to name the next hard fork after Alexander Esgen, though an on-chain Info action proposes naming the hard fork after Fabian von Bergen, with community feedback expected.
