CLARITY Act Enters Final Senate Phase
Politico reported that Democrat senators were called to a meeting on Sunday by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to discuss their position on the bill. Polymarket puts the odds of CLARITY becoming law this year at just 24%, reflecting uncertainty around passage even as the vote approaches.
The bill has undergone significant expansion since May. The CLARITY draft has doubled in size to more than 630 pages, with a recent revision adding 14 pages directing the SEC and CFTC to clarify whether operators of non-decentralized trading protocols must comply with securities and AML rules.
President Donald Trump reportedly met with advisors late last week to discuss whether he'd agree to further curbs on his multi-billion dollar crypto empire. White House crypto advisor Patrick Witt posted on the weekend that it was a "bad day to be a Clarity Act doomer," signaling optimism from the administration.
Optimism isn't universal. Carl Higbie from NewsMax predicted a sea change for crypto if the bill passes, claiming that "banks would shift trillions into this market overnight. Thousands of people, maybe even you if you hold a little bit of it, would become millionaires overnight." He immediately added: "This is not a particularly likely scenario at this point in time, but it's nice to dream."
AI Swarm Risks Prompt Development Slowdown
Amodei cited the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident in July, in which a swarm of agents broke out of containment. Details of the incident remain unclear to the public. Amodei warned that in just 6-12 months' time, such a swarm might be capable of taking over the entire internet — a prediction that reflects his concerns rather than an established security consensus.
The warning resonated across the industry. Elon Musk, head of SpaceX AI, posting on X that "Dario is right" regarding AI development risks. OpenAI boss Sam Altman agreed with Amodei's concerns about development speed.
These concerns didn't immediately shake markets. After-hours prices of SpaceX and Nvidia remained steady on the weekend despite Jason Calacanis predicting that "AI stocks will drop 10%+ on Monday morning. Brace for impact folks."
Anthropic's Rapid Expansion Amid Controversy
On Thursday, Anthropic reported that Russian- and Chinese-speaking operators have been using Claude to automate cyberattacks. The disclosure underscores the security challenges facing AI developers at scale. Anthropic is in talks with Nvidia about a potential $10 billion investment and is seeking to raise as much as $100 billion in an IPO offering, which could value the AI company at about $2 trillion. OpenAI has put plans for an IPO this year on ice, signaling caution despite the sector's rapid growth.
